Gilbert Olomi – a nurse at KCMC

Gilbert Olomi is a nurse at KCMC’s Burn unit, where he has worked for the past 6 years. He is happy with his work and he finds taking care of the hospitalized burn patients very meaningful ❤️

One of the things that is particularly important to him is that the patients do not experience severe pain and discomfort when taking care of the wounds and when changing the bandages. That is why Gilbert has just started a training course in anaesthesiology, so that he can ensure relevant and effective pain relief for the individual patient when taking care of their burn injuries.

Together we can make a difference 🙏

Visit to KCMC in February

Care4Burn has a close collaboration with Children’s Burn & Wound Care Foundation (CBWCF) in Ethiopia. In February, burn surgeon Einar Eriksen, who is the founder of CBWCF and works as a plastic surgeon at the burn unit in Addis Ababa, was once again at KCMC to treat and operate hospitalized burn injured children and young adults. The goal was also to share knowledge and exchange various experiences with the Burn Unit’s staff.

The committed nurses at the Burn Unit at KCMC, which is led by chief physician Dr. Theresia, also participated in the operations Dr. Einar performed.

Dr. Einar operated on, among other patients, a smaller boy hospitalized with burn injuries to his face and chest. He performed a skin graft on the boy’s face. Dr. Einar also operated a boy who, due to untreated burn injuries as a child, had developed severe contractions around both his feet. Old scar tissue was removed, and with skin grafting and a cast on the ankles, the surgical team once again secured the boy’s future mobility.

Based on ongoing fundraising, Care4Burn regularly sends new equipment to KCMC, including mesh machines, Humby knives and blades, in addition to a wide range of skin staplers. This equipment is instrumental in enabling the mentioned, and often quite complicated, operations to be carried out in the unit.

Together we can make a difference.

Patient support for Veronica 6 years old

Every quarter we get an overview from Kilimanjaro Hospital (KCMC) presenting which children and what type of treatment Care4Burn has contributed support to in the previous months.

From May-December 2022, the financial support from Care4Burn has contributed to treatment and care of a total of 12 children; Four boys and eight girls – aged 4 months to 6 years. All these children have been injured due to an open fire (most often the family courtyard) or by falling near boiling water, oil or food. This applies for the majority of child burn injuries in Tanzania, and it is because the family’s cooking area is usually on the ground or is not shielded in separate rooms.

One of the children who has received support from Care4Burn most recently is Veronica. Veronica is 6 years old and came to KCMC two months after her accident. She was burned on 55% of her body, over her stomach, thighs and parts of her chest. Veronica has been hospitalized at KCMC since July 2022. Her wounds are treated daily, and surgeons have attempted to make the first minor transplants from the small portion of skin that is still intact and can be used for skin transplantation. It is a long and cumbersome process, and it is expensive and demanding to treat Veronica and get her back on her feet. Still, Veronica was happy and always smiling when we met her at our visit to KCMC in December ❤️

Travel to Tanzania 2022

At the end of November, Care4Burn traveled to Tanzania and Kilimanjaro Hospital (KCMC) in Moshi. Together with a talented team from Addis Ababa, we spent a productive and meaningful week in the hospital’s burn department. Meeting the staff and patients made a big impression and gave a lot of food for thought.

In addition to donating surgical equipment, Care4Burn facilitated several educational sessions and on-site training, as well as interviewing both staff and patients, in order to further develop our patient sponsorship program.

With the good help of our colleagues in Addis Ababa, we started up the ‘Banana Milk Diet’ in the department, a diet which strengthens both the patients’ nutritional status and the healing process.

Burn patients deserve our attention.

With this goal in mind, we are, with great help from the talented photographer/short film maker George M Doumani, making a documentary about burn injuries in Tanzania, the important work being done at KCMC and the history of Care4Burn.

Together we can make a difference.
