10 year old with extensive injuries

A boy under the age of 10 is living with serious contractions after a burn injury he sustained as a child. The injuries have left him with extensive scar tissue that limits his mobility and affects his daily life to a degree that few can imagine.

Scar tissue in his right armpit has caused his arm to contract and cannot be extended. Burns on his abdomen and upper thighs have also created contractures, which have forced him to stand bent over for several years without the ability to straighten his body. In addition, he lives with a lung injury and has a tracheostomy.

With the support of the Outreach team at the burn unit, he has now been referred to KCMC, where his first surgery is scheduled for next week. It is expected that he will need 3–4 surgeries in total.

We will follow this brave boy’s journey in the coming months. Care4Burn is helping to sponsor his treatment and give him a chance for a better life ❤

21 years old. Just became a mother.

It’s hard to believe that she’s still alive.

She’s 21 years old. Maasai. Newly became a mother.
Shortly after giving birth, she became dizzy – and fell forward into the fire.
Her forehead. Her eyes. Her nose.
Everything was burned.
Again, treatment. No help.
For a whole year, she’s lived with open wounds on her face.
Her eyelids are so stretched out that she can’t close them.
She’s lost the sight in her right eye.
She only has a little sight left in her left eye.
Imagine living like that. For a full year.

When she finally came to KCMC, it was hard to find words.
How did she survive?

Now the treatment is underway.
The surgeons have made a skin flap from her forearm to her forehead.
The next step is to detach the flap and try to rebuild her eyelid so that her remaining vision can be protected.
It’s complex. It’s demanding.

It’s stories like this that remind us why our work is so important.
Care4Burn makes a difference where hope is almost nonexistent.

Veronica has had surgery! 💚

Over the past year, Care4Burn have been raising money so that Veronica could have her tracheostomy removed – a tube she has lived with for over 3 years, after extensive burns on 55% of her body. Yesterday it finally happened.

The surgery was carried out, and her doctor says it was successful. Veronica is now in the ICU, where she will be on controlled ventilation for a few days. This is the first of two surgeries – but the most important step has been taken.

We met Veronica back in 2022 at the Burn Department. She is one of the bravest girls we have ever met. She has been through more than most adults, but she has never given up.
Thank you so much to all of you who have contributed to the purchase of the surgical equipment, which was absolutely crucial for the surgery.

Together we can make a difference 💚🙏

Esther’s story

Four-year-old Esther suffered a serious injury when an old kerosene lamp exploded – an incident that changed everything.
When she was admitted to KCMC Hospital, the injury had worsened and required a skin graft. Thanks to the surgical equipment donated by Care4Burn, she is now recovering 🌱

Esther’s story shows that the equipment we donate to help burn patients also benefits children with other injuries.

We are deeply grateful for your support, which makes it possible to help children like Esther.
Together we can make a difference 🔥🧡

Salma 14 years old

Salma’s Story – When Help Reaches Beyond Burns 🔸

14-year-old Salma was bitten by a snake on her right foot. The unfortunate bite developed into a chronic wound that required a skin graft to heal.

Although Care4Burn’s main focus is burn patients, we supported her treatment and the necessary surgery. It’s important to us that the surgical equipment we’ve donated to KCMC Hospital also benefits other patients – like Salma – who need skin grafts to regain their life and daily routines.

Together, we can make a difference ❤️🔥

Graciana 7 years old

In the middle of December 2023, 7-year-old Graciana was exposed to an accident where she was severely burned on her stomach, both groins, the upper part of both thighs as well as her buttocks and back.

In April 2024, Graciana was operated by Dr. Eriksen during his visit to KCMC, where her groin and thigh were prioritized.

It was a long and cumbersome operation, as a lot of scar tissue had to be oxidized away. When many weeks / months pass after the injury before surgery can be carried out, there are ALWAYS challenges. The operations take much longer time and, as in this case with chronic open wounds, it is also more difficult to get the grafts to heal.

During the weeks after the operation, Graciana has received daily wound care in the Burn Unit while she has waited for the next round of operations – scheduled for mid-June, when Dr. Eriksen again visits KCMC ❤️

Thank you for your support to Care4Burn and for helping children like Graciana 🙏🔥

Together we can make a difference!

Veronica is back on her feet

After almost 2 years of hospitalization and countless operations, Veronica is finally on her feet ❤️

Veronica was admitted to KCMC hospital in July 2022 with burns on nearly 55% of her body, across her abdomen, thighs and parts of her chest. Now, what remains is to close her tracheostomy and retrain her walking function.
We look forward to Veronica being able to go home to family and friends soon 🔥

Thank you for your interest in and support of Car4Burn.

With your support, we can help children like Veronica get a handle on life again 🙏❤️

Janeth 7 years old

Janeth is 7 years old and was hospitalized after her clothes caught fire. She suffered 2nd degree burns on 45% of her body, on her stomach, thighs and arms.

When such a large part of the body is burned, several skin transplants are needed over a long period. It is important that the individual areas heal up along the way, before the next part of the body is treated.

Each operation costs between DKK 900-1000 plus subsequent care and medication.

Many children, young people and adults come into the Burn Unit at KCMC hospital in Moshi during the year. Some have injuries that happened weeks or months ago, and others are hospitalized urgently after a recent burn accident.

Not everyone survives. But fortunately the vast majority do! And with strong professional skills and equipment, the department works continuously to improve both the treatment and the individual hospitalization time.

With your support, we can continue to help children like Janeth and many more children back to life. With you help we can support the department to a strengthened expertise in modern burn treatment.
THANK YOU ❤️🙏

Patient support for Veronica 6 years old

Every quarter we get an overview from Kilimanjaro Hospital (KCMC) presenting which children and what type of treatment Care4Burn has contributed support to in the previous months.

From May-December 2022, the financial support from Care4Burn has contributed to treatment and care of a total of 12 children; Four boys and eight girls – aged 4 months to 6 years. All these children have been injured due to an open fire (most often the family courtyard) or by falling near boiling water, oil or food. This applies for the majority of child burn injuries in Tanzania, and it is because the family’s cooking area is usually on the ground or is not shielded in separate rooms.

One of the children who has received support from Care4Burn most recently is Veronica. Veronica is 6 years old and came to KCMC two months after her accident. She was burned on 55% of her body, over her stomach, thighs and parts of her chest. Veronica has been hospitalized at KCMC since July 2022. Her wounds are treated daily, and surgeons have attempted to make the first minor transplants from the small portion of skin that is still intact and can be used for skin transplantation. It is a long and cumbersome process, and it is expensive and demanding to treat Veronica and get her back on her feet. Still, Veronica was happy and always smiling when we met her at our visit to KCMC in December ❤️

Patientsupport for Queen Mghamba 6 years old

6-year-old Queen Mghamba suffered from burn injuries on 38% of her body when her clothes caught fire while she was playing near the family’s cooking fire. Unfortunately, this is a classic accident in Africa and other 3rd world countries, where cooking often takes place on the ground and over an open fire. Queen Mghamba has so far received four skin transplants, and continues her treatment with support from Care4Burn.

Together we can make a difference 🙏❤️
