Strong local forces are creating better burn care in Tanzania

We feel both proud and inspired when we witness the dedication shown by our colleagues at the Burn Unit at KCMC Hospital in Moshi 🌍🔥

With financial support from Care4Burn, a team from the unit—comprising doctors, nurses, and occupational and physical therapists—travels to district hospitals and health clinics to strengthen local knowledge regarding burn injury treatment. Most recently, the team visited Rombo District Hospital, located a few hours’ drive from Moshi, where they spent several hours training healthcare staff in areas such as:

✅ Fluid resuscitation for burn injuries
✅ Nutrition for burn patients
✅ Wound care and bandaging
✅ Criteria for referral and acute care prior to specialized treatment
✅ The importance of physical and occupational therapy
✅ Prevention and treatment of scar tissue and contractures

The day was dedicated to skills development and relationship-building. When healthcare staff in the districts know how to manage burn injuries and when to refer patients, it can make a crucial difference to the patients’ futures.

Even more importantly, these visits foster lasting collaborations across hospitals. Our colleagues report that several hospitals now regularly contact the Burn Unit for consultation on complex patient cases. This is precisely the kind of knowledge sharing and networking that strengthens the healthcare system far beyond the individual training sessions.

We are incredibly proud of the dedicated staff at the KCMC Burn Unit, who use their expertise, commitment, and perseverance to share specialized knowledge with colleagues throughout the region.
