We are delighted to announce that Care4Burn’s founder, Karianne, will travel to Tanzania with Dr. Einar Eriksen in a couple of weeks. Here, she will hand over surgical equipment, purchased with funds collected and donated in 2018, to the burn wound department at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi.

As something new, we will create video blogs from the journey so that you can follow from home, see link.

During the stay, Dr. Eriksen will do side-by-side teaching of the local surgeons in burn wound surgery, where the purpose is to raise their level of competence so that more patients can benefit from better treatment.

In addition, on behalf of Care4Burn, Karianne will discuss future and more patient-focused collaboration opportunities with hospital management.

So keep an eye out for ongoing updates.

We are very pleased that the journey is in place and that we can continue our cooperation with KCMC, as we have done since 2011. We can’t wait!

Burn injuries is a major global health problem that not many people are aware of.

We would like to change this, which is why we have created three postcards that tell patients’ stories. Children bear the greatest burden, but adults are also often injured. We have put their stories on postcards with the aim to raise awareness about this serious health problem.

Burn injured patients deserve our attention and help. We aim to improve the treatment of their burn injuries. We aim to improve their quality of life.

In addition, we hope that our postcards will increase the awareness of Care4Burn, our work and the prevalence of burn injuries.

The postcards are designed by Andreea Vlad, visual artist and graphic designer. Andreea has recently founded her own company ‘V Studio’, where she works with visual communication in analog and digital media. Andreea is a volunteer in Care4Burn and donates her art and time to help burn patients. In addition to our postcards, she has among other things designed our logo. Welcome Anja Steensig

On a hot summer day in July, Care4Burn’s founder, Karianne W. Fjære, met with Anja Steensig, author, lecturer and spiritual mentor, in her home in Helsingør. It was a meaningful meeting where they shared their interest in and joy of making a difference for other people, each in their own way.   

Anja Steensig is a versatile person with a compassionate heart. She has previously been engaged as both TV and radio host and is now dedicated to convey the power of love as well as the importance of compassion, both towards others and to ourselves.   

Her warmth, ambition and care for other people are values that we in Care4Burn both identify with and are inspired by and it is with great pleasure that we welcome Anja Steensig as ambassador. 

We are very grateful that Anja wants to support Care4Burn’s work and we look forward to see what the future will bring, as we focus our attention towards compassion and kindness.

Care4Burn’s first ambassador

Care4Burn is excited to welcome Lina Lernevall as an ambassador for Care4Burn.

Lina is a nurse and a PhD-student at the Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery, National Burn Centre, Haukeland University Hospital and the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Bergen, Norway.

The title of the PhD is “Parent experience of burn injury in their child and perceived needs for support during hospitalization at a burn care centre”. Through her work she uncovers the need for parental support and how to improve the support for parents of burn injured hospitalised children.

Last year, at Care4Burn’s Charity event, Lina presented her study and gave a poignant lecture on post-traumatic stress in parents to children with burn injuries.

We want to give a BIG ‘Thank you’ to all that have supported Care4Burn in 2018!

In 2018 we fundraised for just under 40.000 DKK, which is 3 times as much as the year before!

With the funds raised we have bought a new mesh-machine for the Burn Unit at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi Tanzania.

Our plan is to hand over the equipment later this year.

Together we can give children with burn injuries in Tanzania the help and attention they deserve.

Visit to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre

In September 2018, Care4Burn’s founder, Karianne W. Fjære, returned to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Moshi, Tanzania. The aim of the visit was to continue the collaboration with the hospital and to resume the conversation on how Care4Burn can contribute to KCMC and the Burn Unit’s ambition to become the country’s leading hospital and ward within burn wound care.

The Burn Unit at KCMC opened in 2016 and has a total of 20 beds. Currently, 17 patients are admitted, where the majority are children with second and third degree burns. The burn unit currently employs 5 full-time nurses. Together with the resident doctors, they provide the daily treatment and care of patients. The Burn Unit has a well-functioning wound care program, where bandages are changed every other day, together with physiotherapy.

Despite the fact that the Burn Unit has a well-functioning wound care program, patients spend an average of 3-6 months in the ward before being discharged. One of the biggest challenges facing the patients in the Burn Unit is the lack of trained personnel in burn care management and access to necessary and modern surgical equipment for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Another urgent challenge is the lack of resources in the hospital and low access to the hospital’s operating theatres, meaning that burn wound patients often lie weeks and months awaiting their crucial surgery.

At this year’s meeting between Care4Burn and KCMC, the necessity for connecting an operating theatre to the burn unit was discussed in addition to the need for surgical equipment and training of local doctors and nurses. 

A dedicated operating theatre, equipped with surgical equipment, and managed by skilled local health care professionals would make a tremendous difference and boost the quality of treatment for the patients. With its own operating theatre, specialist physicians, conducting modern plastic surgery would likely be able to perform 1-2 surgeries daily, compared with 1-2 operations per week at this time.

One of Care4Burn’s goals for 2019 is to collect funds for additional surgical equipment used for modern burn care treatment (Mesh-machine and dermatomes) for KCMC and the burn unit.

A meaningful evening

The 14th of June 2018, Care4Burn held its first charity event at Møbelfabrikken in Copenhagen. Together with Magnus & Søn, Care4Burn hosted a meaningful evening with lectures on pediatric burn injuries in developing countries and Care4Burn’s work in Tanzania by Karianne W. Fjære.

Burn injuries often occur in connection with food preparation over open flame and is a global health problem where children bear the greatest burden. In several African countries, burn injuries are the third most common cause of hospitalization, and in developing countries, about 11 million burn injuries are recorded annually.

The charity event was opened by the talented musician Mamaduo Tonde from Burkina Faso. To the sound of his captivating music, the participants had the opportunity to experience the evening’s photo exhibition, which presented Care4Burn’s work over the past 10 years.

Care4Burn works towards sustainable treatment of burn wound patients by improving access to surgical equipment for modern burn care treatment in addition to strengthening local competencies within burn wound care and reconstructive surgery.

The photo exhibition included several patient stories, where the participants could see pictures from before and after surgeries, emphasizing how crucial treatment is for the individual patient’s quality of life.

From the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burn Injuries at Haukeland Hospital in Bergen, Norway, PhD student Lina Lernevall participated and presented a poignant lecture on post-traumatic stress in parents to children with burn injuries.

Closing the charity event, Flying Fox Entertainment, brought smiles to the participants’ faces with their enchanting flame dancing, introducing flames from a more positive side.

We want to thank all the attendees for supporting children with burn injuries in sub-Saharan Africa and for giving this ‘forgotten’ patient group the attention it deserves.
